25 recalls across 16 model years
The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport has 25 recalls spanning 2011 through 2022, with the most serious recent issue being a transmission software error on 2019-2022 models equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and mechanical key ignition, where the CVT control unit can incorrectly reduce the gear ratio at high speed and stall the engine.
On 2018 models equipped with the Forward Collision Mitigation system, the system can fail to function as intended, removing automatic braking assistance before a potential collision. A separate 2018 recall covers the same system's pedestrian detection software, which can apply the brakes longer than necessary and cause the driver to over-brake in response.
The 2013-2016 model years carry several mechanical and safety concerns. Front control arm attachment can fail on 2013-2015 vehicles, causing the arm to detach and leaving the driver with no steering control. On 2013-2016 models, water can enter the rear brake calipers and corrode the parking brake actuator shafts, preventing the parking brake from fully engaging or releasing. The 2016 model year has an additional parking brake corrosion path through the same mechanism, and a door latch that can release in high temperatures and let a door swing open while driving. Front passenger seatbelt anchor fasteners on 2013-2015 models can loosen over time and fail to hold the occupant in a crash. A 2013 model-year recall covers improperly routed driver airbag wiring on leather-seat vehicles, where seat height adjustment can damage the wiring and disable the airbag warning system. The 2015-2016 CVT can hesitate during acceleration, and a defective starter relay on 2015-2016 vehicles can cause the engine to stall or overheat.
Going back further, 2011-2016 vehicles share a wiper linkage corrosion issue where water intrusion can cause the wiper link ball joint to corrode and separate, leaving the wipers inoperative. The wiper motor itself is vulnerable to the same water intrusion on 2011-2015 models, with internal corrosion eventually causing motor failure. The 2015 model with a 2.0L CVT has a CVT hose clamp that can work loose, leak transmission fluid, and leave the transmission inoperable. On 2011-2012 models, the accessory drive belt tensioner flange can crack, the belt can detach, and the engine can stall. The 2011-2012 and 2016 liftgate gas struts can corrode and suddenly lose pressure, causing the liftgate to drop without warning. The 2013 model has a front stabilizer link bracket weld that can fail, allowing the link to damage a tire or brake hose and compromise steering and braking. A 2013 AWD-specific recall covers a missing fuel sending unit harness that can cause a false full-tank reading and an unexpected engine stall when the tank runs dry. The 2011 model has a panoramic glass roof that can detach if primer was omitted during installation, and a brake booster switch sleeve that can crack and prevent the brake pedal from returning to its proper position.
