The 2016 Smart Fortwo has 4 recalls, the most serious being a transmission defect that allows the gearshift to move out of Park without the brake pedal pressed or the ignition on, which can allow the vehicle to roll unexpectedly.
The other significant concern involves the parking brake: a lock nut securing the parking brake cable to the lever can loosen over time, causing the lever to travel further before the brake engages and reducing its holding force to the point where the vehicle may roll on a slope. On the lighting side, the horizontal adjustment mechanism on the headlights may not have been properly sealed, meaning the aim can be shifted outside its intended range, reducing how well the driver sees the road ahead and potentially directing light into the eyes of oncoming drivers.
