The 2016 Smart Fortwo has 4 recalls, the most serious being a transmission defect that can allow the gearshift to move out of Park without the brake pedal pressed, raising the risk of unintended rollaway. The parking brake has a separate concern: a lock nut securing the parking brake cable to the lever can loosen over time, gradually increasing how far the lever must travel before the brake engages. As that travel grows, the holding force drops to the point where the vehicle may roll on its own when parked. On the lighting side, the horizontal adjustment mechanism on the headlights may not be properly sealed, leaving them vulnerable to being moved outside their designed aim. Headlights pointed too far in any direction can reduce how much road the driver sees at night and may blind oncoming drivers.
