2001 Toyota Highlander

The 2001 Toyota Highlander has 4 recalls, the most serious involving the fuel system, where a breather hose clamp on top of the fuel tank can be displaced in a crash and compromise the fuel vapor recovery system's integrity.

The brake master cylinder reservoir filler cap can draw air into the brake fluid reservoir, which causes an unusual noise when the brakes are applied and forces the pedal to travel further toward the floor before the brakes engage fully. That longer pedal stroke extends the distance the vehicle needs to stop, raising the risk of a collision. Recalls 3 and 4 describe the same underlying brake defect, so this is one issue with one fix. On the interior safety side, slamming a rear side door hard while the child protection lock lever is set to the locked position can knock that lever out of position and into the unlocked state, meaning the rear door could then be opened from inside by a child passenger.
