2004 Toyota Highlander

The 2004 Toyota Highlander has 4 recalls, the most serious involving a loose center console floor cover that can lean into the accelerator pedal and prevent it from returning to idle, raising the risk of an unintended acceleration crash.

The remaining three recalls cover brakes and a labeling compliance issue. Two of the recalls address the same brake fluid problem: if brake fluid without the correct polymer additives is used during a service visit, an internal rubber seal inside the brake master cylinder can dry out and curl as the piston moves. Over time, this can cause brake fluid to leak, which may change how the brake pedal feels underfoot and gradually reduce overall braking performance. On the compliance side, certain Highlanders sold through Southeast Toyota dealers were missing the required load-carrying capacity labels, which tell drivers how much weight the vehicle can safely handle. Without that information, a driver may unknowingly overload the vehicle, which can affect handling and stability.
