The 2014 Toyota Highlander has 5 recalls, the most serious involving a software defect in the front passenger seat's occupant classification system that can fail to properly restrain a larger adult passenger in a crash.
On the steering side, a component inside the electric power steering control unit can degrade over time and cause a sudden loss of power steering assist, making the vehicle harder to control. Two recalls address seat and seatbelt assembly issues on vehicles built during specific production windows: the second-row right-hand seat may not fully lock into its track, allowing it to shift in a crash, and the third-row center seatbelt anchor may not have been properly secured to the floor, meaning the belt could pull free when it is needed most.
