The Volkswagen Beetle Convertible has 2 recalls, both involving the driver's side airbag inflator, which can explode and send metal fragments into the cabin, posing a serious risk of injury or death to the driver and passengers — affecting 2006-2007 and 2012-2019 model years. Both recalls share the same underlying defect: the airbag inflator propellant degrades over time when exposed to high humidity and heat, which can cause the inflator to rupture violently rather than deploy normally. The 2017-2019 model years are covered by one filing, while a separate filing covers the 2012-2014 years. The 2006-2007 model years are also included in the broader campaign. Together, these two recalls cover nearly the entire production span of the Beetle Convertible.
