12 recalls across 5 model years
The Volkswagen EuroVan has 12 recalls spanning the 1992–2003 production run, with the most serious recent issue being a Takata-type driver's airbag inflator defect on 2003 models where the inflator can rupture during deployment and send metal fragments into the cabin.
The 2003 model year also shares the airbag concern across several body styles including the Camper Van and Chassis variants. Going back to the late 1990s, 1997 Camper Van models have a fuel tank vapor container that was punctured during camper equipment installation, allowing fuel vapors to escape and creating a fire risk.
On the steering side, 1992 and 1993 models share a universal joint locking bolt that can work loose over time and leave the driver with no steering control. The 1992 and 1993 model years also share a fuel hose issue where the feed and return hoses in the engine compartment can loosen at their clamps over time, allowing fuel to seep out near hot engine components and potentially ignite. The 1992 model has a parking brake tension spring that can be improperly installed, causing the brake to release on its own and the vehicle to roll away, and the same spring issue appears on 1993 models as well.
The 2001 model year has a recall tied to the owner's manual rather than a mechanical defect: the manual incorrectly instructs owners to route a child seat tether strap under the head restraint, which can cause the head restraint to separate from the seat in a crash and strike a child occupant. The 1992 model year has a compliance label showing an incorrect gross vehicle weight rating.
