On automatic transmission models, the shift lever locking pin can break free during forceful gear changes, allowing the lever to shift from Drive into Reverse without pressing the release button. If that happens while the vehicle is moving, the sudden engagement of reverse can cause an immediate loss of control. On the engine side, using the cruise control's resume function can slacken the accelerator cable enough that it sags and catches on a nearby water pipe bracket, preventing the throttle from returning to idle and leaving the engine running faster than intended.
