Summary
The Volkswagen Passat has 62 recalls spanning the 1989–2020 production run, with the most serious recent issue being a 2020 model year recall where the front passenger airbag was folded incorrectly during assembly and can deploy with too much force in a crash, raising the risk of injury.
The 2020 model year represents the final production year, and beyond the airbag folding issue, it stands largely on its own. Moving back into the mid-to-late 2010s, 2017–2018 models have brake caliper bracket mounting bolts that may not have been properly tightened, allowing the caliper to shift and reduce braking ability. The 2018 model year also has a separate issue where brake caliper pistons may have insufficient coating, which can further reduce braking performance. On 2017 models specifically, brake fluid can leak slowly from line connections, lowering the fluid level and lengthening stopping distances. The 2015 model has a rear brake line that may not have been properly tightened and can leak, and a separate seatback recliner bracket that may not engage correctly, causing unexpected seatback movement while driving.
The 2012–2014 era carries a notable cluster of fire-related recalls. On 2014 models equipped with a 1.8T engine and automatic transmission, O-ring seals at the oil cooler can leak transmission fluid onto hot surfaces. The 2014 model year also has a fuel rail sealing cap that can fail and allow gasoline to escape into the engine compartment. On 2012–2014 diesel models with a Direct-Shift Transmission, the heat shield over the right half-shaft may be too short, allowing grease from the drive boot to contact the exhaust and ignite. A corroded underbody sensor connector on 2012–2014 TDI models can short and overheat, also raising fire risk. The 2012–2013 model years have a low-beam headlight bulb that can work loose and lose electrical contact, cutting off illumination at night.
The 2009 model year has an electromechanical steering control unit with a potentially damaged capacitor that can misprocess steering inputs, causing vibration in the wheel or a loss of power assist. On 2009 models, a wiring harness for the right front seatbelt buckle can be damaged by seat movement, causing the passenger airbag to deactivate. The 2008 model has an engine control module that may unexpectedly raise engine RPM with the air conditioning on, causing an unintended surge.
The 2006–2007 era has multiple airbag inflator recalls: on 2006 and 2007 models, the driver's frontal airbag inflator can rupture under excessive internal pressure and send metal fragments toward occupants. Humidity and temperature cycling on 2006 and 2007 models can also degrade the airbag propellant and cause deployment with too much force. A separate 2006 issue involves tie rod nuts that may not be properly torqued and can separate, causing loss of steering. Also on 2006 models, a vacuum line can fracture in cold weather and disable power brake assist, requiring much greater pedal effort to stop. The fuel pump control module on 2006–2010 models can lose power, stalling the engine. The 2006 wiper motor can also fail in heavy rain, cutting visibility without warning.
