The 2007 Volkswagen Passat has 7 recalls, all centered on two serious safety issues: a driver's airbag inflator that can rupture or explode and send metal fragments into the cabin, and a fuel pump that can fail and stall the engine.
The airbag concern is the more dangerous of the two. Over time, heat and humidity degrade the propellant inside the driver's frontal airbag inflator, causing it to build excessive pressure when the bag deploys. That pressure can burst the inflator, throwing sharp metal pieces toward the driver and other occupants. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the issue, which is why multiple recall filings exist for the same underlying defect. The fuel pump concern is separate: an interruption in power to the fuel pump control module can cause the pump to stop working, cutting fuel to the engine and causing an unexpected stall while driving.
