The 2006 Volkswagen Passat has 13 recalls, the most serious being the driver's frontal airbag inflator, which can rupture or explode during deployment and send metal fragments into the cabin, potentially causing serious injury or death.
The airbag issue appears across multiple filings and covers both a risk of rupture from excessive pressure at deployment and longer-term propellant degradation from heat and humidity that makes the inflator increasingly dangerous over time. On the steering side, tie rod securing nuts may not have been tightened sufficiently at the factory, and a loose nut can allow the tie rod to separate, causing a sudden loss of steering control. Two recalls address the brake power assist vacuum line, which can crack and disconnect in cold weather, leaving the driver with significantly higher pedal effort and longer stopping distances. A fuel system recall covers an electrical interruption to the fuel pump control module that can cause the pump to run continuously until the battery drains, or fail outright and stall the engine while driving. The wiper motor can also fail when moisture gets inside it during heavy rain, leaving the driver without wipers and reduced visibility.
