The 2000 Volkswagen Passat has two recalls, both concerning the same fuel gauge defect where sulfur deposits inside the fuel tank can cause the gauge to read full even when the tank is nearly or completely empty.

Sulfur in common pump gasoline reacts with certain fuel additives and builds up on the contact points of the three sending units mounted inside the fuel tank. When those contact points become coated, they register low electrical resistance, which the gauge interprets as a full tank. The result is that the fuel gauge can display a misleading reading, and the engine may run out of fuel without any prior warning from the gauge.
