The 2018 Volkswagen Passat has 4 recalls, the most serious involving brake caliper mounting bolts that may not have been tightened properly, allowing the caliper to shift and significantly reducing stopping power.

A second brake recall involves the caliper pistons themselves, which may have insufficient coating on their surfaces. As the coating degrades, the pistons can lose their ability to apply consistent pressure, further reducing braking performance and raising the risk of a crash. Taken together, both brake issues mean the car may not stop as quickly or predictably as expected, particularly under hard braking. On the lighting side, some Passats may be missing a small blocking cap that prevents the horizontal aim of the headlights from being adjusted outside of the required range. Without it, the headlights can end up aimed too far left, right, or down, reducing how far ahead the driver can see at night and potentially directing glare toward oncoming traffic. There is also a compliance recall covering vehicles that were originally used internally by the manufacturer and later sold to the public without full confirmation that they met all applicable safety regulations, meaning certain safety systems or equipment on those specific vehicles may not meet required standards.
