The 2010 Volkswagen Passat has 5 recalls, the most serious being a driver's frontal airbag inflator that can rupture or explode in a crash, sending metal fragments into the cabin with the potential for serious injury or death.
All three airbag inflator recalls describe the same underlying hazard and should be treated as a single concern. There is also a related issue with the airbag clock spring, a coiled cable behind the steering wheel that keeps the airbag powered while turning. Debris can contaminate it and break the electrical connection, leaving the driver's airbag unable to deploy in a crash. On the fuel side, the fuel pump control module can lose electrical power, causing the fuel pump to stop working, the engine to stall, and the vehicle to lose power unexpectedly while driving.
