The 1985 Volvo 700 Series has 4 recalls, the most serious being two equal-severity issues: on air-conditioned models, an engine wiring harness can chafe against an A/C pipe, short-circuit, and start an engine compartment fire; and on certain trims, front driveshaft flange bolts can loosen until the driveshaft separates from the transmission, causing loss of power to the rear wheels and reduced vehicle control.
On the occupant safety side, the seatbelts for the rear auxiliary seat can be routed incorrectly over a diagonal cross brace rather than under it because the routing label is not clear enough, and an improperly routed belt can release unexpectedly. There is also an engine concern where the water pump pulley can crack and shed pieces inside the engine compartment, posing a risk of injury to anyone working near the engine at the time.
