Summary
The Volvo VNL (4) has 12 recalls covering 2022-2027 model years, with the most serious being a steering defect on 2025-2026 models where the dynamic steering system can malfunction and cause a sudden, complete loss of steering control. A separate engine recall on 2022-2025 models shares the same severity level: idler gear bracket fasteners that were not properly tightened can allow the idler gear to break free, damage the engine, and cause a stall while driving.
On the braking side, 2025-2026 models have service brakes that can take longer than expected to release, which can affect stopping behavior. Covering 2024-2027 models without auxiliary parking brakes, a weight distribution issue in bias mode can leave the parking brake without enough axle load to hold the vehicle on a grade, risking a rollaway.
Several electrical and lighting issues affect the 2024-2026 range. The automatic high beams on those years can fail to dim when oncoming traffic approaches, reducing visibility for other drivers. The instrument panel on 2025-2026 models can go dark while driving, taking the speedometer and warning indicators with it. Load lock clamps on the back of the cab on 2024-2026 models can loosen, allowing load lock bars to drop free and create road hazards. Turn signals on 2025-2027 models can stop functioning, leaving other drivers without directional cues.
The 2026 model year carries a few specific issues: roof center marker lights can fail to illuminate, reducing how visible the vehicle is to surrounding traffic at night; and an interior door latch cable can be incorrectly installed, preventing the door from being opened from inside the cab and potentially trapping the occupant.
A single 2025 vehicle has a software error in the instrument cluster that prevents the anti-lock brake warning light from illuminating when the system malfunctions. Going back to 2023-2026 models, the backlight behind the hazard switch can fail, making it hard to locate the switch quickly in an emergency.
