Summary
The Yamaha YZF1000R has 4 recalls, all affecting the 1998 model year, with the most serious being a clutch component that can fracture and lock up the engine, which in turn locks the rear wheel and can throw the rider.
The front brake system carries its own serious concern: the brake pad material can separate from its backing plate, leaving the front brake with little or no stopping power. There is also a coolant hose clamp at the thermostat housing that may not have been tightened adequately, allowing the hose to blow off under operating conditions. When that happens, escaping steam can obscure the rider's vision and coolant spilling onto the rear tire can cause it to lose grip. The lower-severity recall involves screws securing the side stand switch, which can loosen and fall out from heat and vibration. Without a functioning side stand switch, it becomes possible to ride with the stand down, and if the stand contacts the ground mid-turn, the bike can be knocked off course.
