The 1998 Yamaha YZF1000R has 4 recalls, with the most serious being a clutch component that can break and lock the engine, which in turn locks the rear wheel and can throw the rider without warning.

Two other recalls also carry serious crash risk. A coolant hose clamp at the thermostat housing may not hold securely, allowing the hose to detach while riding. When that happens, the cooling system can vent a burst of steam directly into the rider's line of sight, and any coolant that reaches the rear tire can cause it to lose traction. Separately, the front brake pads can lose their bond to the backing plate and separate entirely, stripping away front braking force when it is needed most. Both of these can result in a crash with little or no warning. On the structural side, screws securing the side stand switch can work loose from engine heat and vibration and fall out. Without that switch functioning, the motorcycle can be ridden with the side stand still deployed. If the stand contacts the pavement during a lean in a corner, it can catch the ground abruptly and pull the bike out from under the rider.
