51 recalls across 27 model years
The Acura MDX has 51 recalls spanning the 2001 through 2026 model years, with the most serious recent issue being a brake pedal pivot pin that can shift out of position on 2023-2025 models, potentially preventing the driver from applying the brakes.
On the 2025 MDX, the center touchscreen can go blank while reversing, preventing the rearview camera image from displaying. On 2023-2025 models, that unsecured brake pedal pivot pin can leave the driver unable to slow or stop the vehicle as intended.
The 2020-2022 generation has a front passenger seat sensor that can misread occupant weight, causing the airbag to deploy incorrectly in a crash. The 2020 model year specifically has a brake master cylinder that can separate from the booster assembly, resulting in complete brake failure. On 2016-2020 models, a connecting rod bearing inside the engine can wear and seize, causing the engine to stall or, in severe cases, catch fire. The 2017-2019 model years have rear brake caliper pistons with insufficient coating that reduces braking performance. Also on 2014-2020 models, rear subframe mounting points in salt-belt states can rust through, allowing suspension components to fail and the vehicle to lose handling. Moisture entering the tailgate light assembly on 2014-2020 vehicles can knock out the taillights entirely, and an earlier repair attempt for this same problem on 2014 models was found to be insufficient, requiring a second fix.
The 2018-2019 MDX has timing belt teeth that can separate from the belt and stall the engine. The 2016-2018 models have a fuel pump that can clog with particulates and stall the engine as well. On 2014-2015 models, an air conditioning compressor clutch bolt can corrode and break, sending the clutch plate off the vehicle as a road hazard. The 2014-2015 models also have fuel tanks with insufficient welds that can leak fuel near ignition sources, and 2014 AWD models have drive shaft bolts that can loosen and allow the shaft to detach. The 2014-2015 models are also subject to the collision mitigation braking system misreading metal roadside barriers and applying emergency braking unexpectedly.
The 2003-2006 model years carry the most concentrated safety hazard in the model's history: Takata airbag inflators on both the driver and passenger sides that can rupture in a crash and send metal fragments into the cabin. This affected 2003-2006 passenger-side inflators and 2003-2006 driver-side inflators across multiple recall filings. The 2005-2006 model years separately have a traction control system that can activate unexpectedly without illuminating the brake lights. The 2003-2004 models have an airbag control module that can trigger inadvertent deployment of front airbags, side curtain airbags, and seatbelt pretensioners while driving. On 2012 models, a fuel tank vent valve can fail and allow fuel to leak. The 2001 model year, primarily in salt-belt states, has front coil springs that can corrode, fracture, and puncture a front tire.
