5 recalls across 10 model years
The BMW 335xi has 5 recalls spanning 2006 to 2015, with the most serious being a Takata airbag inflator defect on 2006-2011 models where the driver-side inflator can explode during deployment and send metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death.
The 2006-2011 airbag issue appears in two related forms: one covers vehicles with their original steering wheels, and a second covers vehicles where the original steering wheel was replaced with a sport or M-sport wheel that also contains a defective inflator. Both carry the same risk of inflator rupture and metal fragmentation. On those same 2006-2011 model years, the wiring and electrical connectors for the heating and air conditioning system can overheat and melt, raising the risk of a fire even when the vehicle is parked and unattended.
The 2014 model year has a fuel pump that can fail without warning, causing the engine to stall unexpectedly while driving. Rounding out the recall list, 2012-2015 models have a side marker light that can fail to illuminate, reducing the vehicle's visibility to other drivers at night.
