BMW 740i Recalls

The BMW 740i has 13 recalls spanning 2012 through 2025, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2023–2025 models where the integrated brake system can lose power assist and the anti-lock and stability control systems can stop functioning, extending stopping distances and reducing the driver's ability to maintain control.

The 2023–2025 brake system issue has been addressed through multiple filings covering the same underlying defect. Separately on the 2023–2024 model years, a faulty ground connection to the steering wheel can disable the hands-on detection system, meaning the car may not recognize when the driver's hands have left the wheel and will not trigger the emergency stopping assistant. The 2023 model year carries several additional issues: front seat welds that can fail and prevent the seat from properly restraining an occupant in a crash; an Interaction Bar on the dashboard that can fail to activate windshield defrost or hazard warning lights; windshield wipers that can stop working in certain weather conditions; and a telematics unit that may not transmit the vehicle's location to emergency responders after a crash.

Going back to 2020–2021 models, a starter motor can overheat and ignite nearby material in the engine compartment, creating a fire risk. Those same years also have a rearview camera software issue where the image can be missing or reduced while reversing. The 2013–2015 model years may have received incorrect replacement left rear taillight assemblies, making the vehicle less visible to drivers behind it.

On earlier production, the 2012 model year has a CV joint that can fracture and cause sudden loss of drive power. The 2013–2015 taillight issue is the only other recall touching that era of production.
