BMW 740i Recalls

The BMW 740i has 14 recalls spanning 2012 through 2025, with the most serious recent issue being a brake system malfunction on 2023–2025 models where the integrated brake system can lose power assist and disable anti-lock braking and stability control, extending stopping distances and reducing the driver's ability to maintain control.

The 2023–2025 generation carries the most recall activity. The brake system issue mentioned above has been the subject of multiple filings covering the same underlying defect, where the integrated brake unit can fail to deliver full braking force and leave the driver without anti-lock braking or stability control. These same 2023–2024 models also have a seat recall: the front seat length adjustment mechanism may not have been properly welded, meaning the seat could fail to hold an occupant securely in a crash. On 2023 models specifically, several electrical issues are present. The dashboard Interaction Bar may fail to activate windshield defrosting or hazard warning lights, and the controls may not illuminate when pressed. The windshield wipers can also fail during certain weather conditions, reducing forward visibility. A loose ground connection to the steering wheel on 2023–2024 models can disable the hands-on detection system, which means the vehicle may not recognize when a driver has let go of the wheel and will not trigger the emergency stopping assistant. There is also a 2023-only issue where the telematics unit may fail to transmit the vehicle's location to emergency responders after a crash.

Going back to 2020–2021 model years, a software defect in the engine control module can cause the starter motor to overheat and ignite combustible material in the engine compartment, raising the risk of an engine fire. The 2020–2021 model years also have a rearview camera issue where the image can be missing or reduced, reducing the driver's visibility while reversing.

On 2019 models with the diesel engine (540d xDrive), an incorrect crankshaft sensor firmware can prevent the sensor from reading the crankshaft properly, causing the engine to stall unexpectedly.

The 2013–2015 model years have a taillight issue where certain replacement left rear taillight assemblies may be the wrong part, making the vehicle less visible to following traffic. The 2012 740i has a constant velocity joint that can fracture, cutting drive power to the wheels without warning.
