The 2001 Buick Century has 3 recalls, the most serious involving seat belt buckles that can fail under crash loads and a driver side airbag inflator that can separate from its module, leaving the airbag unable to deploy properly. The seat belt buckles may not hold under the force of a crash, reducing restraint for the occupant wearing them. The airbag concern is separate: if the inflator pulls away from the module during a collision, the airbag does not inflate as intended, reducing protection in a side impact. There is also a compliance recall involving the airbag warning label on the sun visor, where the text area is smaller than required by federal standards.

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, EQUIPPED WITH SUNVISOR LOCATED AIR BAG LABELS, FAIL TO CONFORM TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLES SAFETY STANDARD NO. 208, "OCCUPANT CRASH PROTECTION." THESE VEHICLES HAVE A MESSAGE AREA LESS THAN 30 CM WHICH DOES NOT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE STANDARD.

OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MAY 4, 2001.
