Both the driver and passenger frontal airbag inflators are affected by this defect. When either airbag deploys in a crash, the inflator housing can burst apart rather than inflate normally, turning the module itself into a source of metal shrapnel directed at anyone seated in the front. This is a well-documented class of airbag defect with the potential for fatal outcomes, and it affects both seating positions on this vehicle. The third recall involves the rear interior: certain vehicles left the factory without the C-pillar head impact protection pads installed on the interior pillars beside the rear seating area. In a crash, rear seat occupants can strike that harder, unpadded surface rather than the foam-backed pad intended to absorb some of the impact force, raising the risk of head injury.
