The 2009 Dodge Sprinter 2500 has 4 recalls, the most serious being defective airbag inflators on both the driver and passenger sides that can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death.
Both frontal airbag inflators are affected, and the risk is the same on either side: a rupture during deployment turns the inflator itself into a source of shrapnel. Vehicles equipped with an optional three-seat bench in the passenger compartment have a separate seatbelt concern, where the belts on that bench may not restrain occupants properly in a crash, raising the risk of serious injury. There is also a fuel system issue: a spring plate on the oil filler neck can crack and allow engine oil to leak into the engine compartment, where it can accumulate dirt and potentially lead to a fire.
