5/5 Overall
NHTSA 5-Star Safety Rating
The 2022 Ford Expedition draws complaints spread fairly evenly across the powertrain, electrical system, and forward collision avoidance system. On the powertrain side, owners frequently describe harsh or erratic downshifts occurring under normal driving conditions, with no warning lights present, the transmission behavior is reported as sudden and unsettling. Electrical complaints center on no-start events accompanied by multiple warning lights, with some owners also noting an airbag warning light that stays on persistently. The forward collision avoidance system generates a notable share of complaints as well, with owners reporting unexpected activation or system behavior while driving. A smaller but recurring thread involves brake noise, specifically a loud squeal during deceleration that multiple owners mention.

By System
The 2022 Ford Expedition has 12 recalls, the most serious being front brake lines that can rub against the engine air intake pipe, wear through, and leak brake fluid, reducing braking ability.
The low-pressure fuel pump can also fail and stall the engine while driving. Towing-related recalls cover two connected issues: a software error in the trailer brake controller can prevent a towed trailer's brakes from applying, and a separate wiring issue can cut power to trailer lights and brakes entirely, reducing trailer visibility and the driver's ability to slow down. Note that some vehicles affected by the trailer brake software issue had already been through an earlier repair attempt that did not fully resolve the problem.
On the occupant safety side, the front seatbelt pretensioners can inadvertently lock the belt so it neither retracts nor extends, leaving occupants unable to buckle up properly or be held in place in a crash. The center console's chrome trim can bubble, peel, and leave sharp edges that occupants may contact.
Several visibility concerns are also present: the moonroof wind deflector can detach at highway speed and become a road hazard, wiper arms can break and leave the windshield uncleared, and the rearview camera image can freeze or go missing while reversing. Rounding out the list, the airbag warning label may be missing from the dashboard, and the owner's manual lacks instructions for adjusting or removing certain head restraints.
