4 recalls across 3 model years
The Ford Explorer Police Interceptor has 4 recalls covering 2017 through 2021 model years, with the most serious being a rear axle mounting bolt that can fracture on 2020-2021 models, allowing the driveshaft to disconnect and the vehicle to roll away when parked without the parking brake applied.
The 2017 model year has two separate issues. On vehicles equipped with the 3.5L turbocharged engine, an oil supply tube to the turbocharger can leak oil onto hot engine components, raising the risk of an engine fire. Separately, some 2017 models may be missing two inboard attachment points for the second-row seats, meaning those seats may not hold an occupant in place during a crash and the seatbelt anchors may not perform as designed. On 2020 models, the windshield washer fluid was contaminated with brake fluid at the factory, which can degrade the wiper system's ability to clean the windshield and reduce forward visibility while driving.
