Summary
The Ford F-450 Super Duty has 7 recalls spanning 2008 through 2023, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2021 dual-rear-wheel models with a pickup box and 6.7L diesel, where a cracked left-hand fifth wheel hitch mounting bracket can allow the hitch to detach and send a trailer separating from the truck.
The 2021 model year also has a separate fuel system concern: a defect in the secondary fuel filter cap, found on 6.7L diesel trucks, can develop a pinhole over time and allow fuel to leak from the top of the filter, creating a fire risk. On 2023 models, three recalls apply. The clockspring wiring in the steering wheel can disconnect, disabling the driver's front airbag in a crash and potentially taking out the horn and other steering wheel controls at the same time. On trucks fitted with a digital instrument cluster, the cluster can go completely blank, leaving the driver without any gauges or warning indicators. There is also a rearview camera issue on 2023 trucks where water intrudes into the tailgate camera connector, corrodes the parking sensor module, and causes the camera image to display incorrectly or not at all, also disabling the reverse brake assist function. Going back to 2017, certain trucks equipped with a 6.7L diesel and a middle-position fuel tank have a protective shield over the fuel conditioning module that can work loose and get knocked away by road debris or water spray, which can then force open a drain valve on the module. The earliest recall covers 2008 trucks with the 6.4L diesel, where insufficient clearance between the positive battery cable and a splash shield bolt can chafe through the cable insulation and cause an electrical short, with potential for heat damage or fire under the hood.
