12 recalls across 12 model years
The Ford F-53 has 12 recalls spanning 2011 through 2026, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2025-2026 models where the front axle hub assembly may be missing the spindle nut, which can lead to brake damage or a wheel detaching from the vehicle while in motion.
The 2025-2026 model years also have two brake light issues: on some 2025 vehicles an incorrectly installed switch can cause the brake lights to illuminate when the driver is not braking or fail to illuminate when they are, and on 2025-2026 models the brake lights can stay on continuously, both conditions removing a key warning signal for following traffic. The 2024 model year has a software issue where the instrument panel may not display the transmission gear position, making it difficult to confirm which gear the vehicle is in. On 2023 models, corrosion in a data connector can knock out the entire instrument panel, taking the speedometer and warning lights with it.
The 2022 model year carries two separate issues: a steering wheel attachment bolt that can loosen and allow the wheel to separate from the column, and rear brake caliper bolts that may not be properly tightened, allowing the caliper to shift and damage the wheel or brake lines, reducing braking ability or causing a loss of tire pressure.
Going back further, 2020-2021 vehicles may have insufficient rear axle lubricant, which can cause the rear wheel bearings to seize and the rear axle or driveshaft to fail, cutting drive power and disabling the parking brake. The 2017 model year has an anti-lock brake control unit that may be missing internal valve plugs, allowing brake fluid to leak or air to enter the system and extend stopping distances. On 2016 models, an incorrect shift cable bracket allows the transmission to be shifted out of park without the brake pedal applied, risking unintended movement. The 2013 model year has a steering gear held by incorrect fasteners that can allow the steering gear to separate, causing a sudden loss of steering. The 2011-2012 models have a gear selector cable that can break at its attachment point, causing the instrument panel to show the wrong gear and leaving the driver uncertain whether the vehicle is in park or reverse.
