The 1999 Ford Super Duty has 4 recalls, the most serious of which include a throttle cable that can stick wide open, steering tie rod or drag link ball studs that can separate from their sockets, and a pickup box that may detach in a rollover and spill fuel.
On the engine side, the accelerator cable runs at an angle that causes the inner wire to wear against its end fitting. Over time, the wire strands can fray or sever entirely, leaving the throttle stuck in an open position and the engine unable to return to idle. In the steering system, the ball studs in the tie rod ends and drag link can wear prematurely due to insufficient hardness, and if one separates completely from its socket, the driver loses the ability to steer the vehicle. Both of these defects apply to certain vehicles in this model range. On the structural and fuel side, this recall applies to regular cab 4x2 and 4x4 models with a six or eight foot bed: the mounting points that attach the pickup box to the frame can be damaged in a frontal impact, and in a subsequent rollover the box may shift or break free, tearing fuel lines and allowing fuel to spill at a rate beyond what safety standards permit. The remaining recall is a compliance issue involving missing French-language airbag warning labels on the sun visors.
