Summary
The GMC Sierra HD has 16 recalls spanning 2011 through 2024, with the most serious recent issue being a 2024 model year steering gear shaft that can break and cause complete loss of steering control.
The 2024 model year also has a recall for the power-locking tailgate switch, where water intrusion can cause the tailgate to unlatch while parked, allowing unsecured cargo to fall onto the road. On 2021 models, improperly tightened bolts on the brake pressure modulator valve can allow water to enter and short circuit the assembly, creating a fire risk. The 2020 model year has several issues: on diesel-equipped trucks, the transmission control valve can wear and lose pressure over time, causing harsh shifts and sudden rear wheel lockup; a prior repair attempt for this same defect on some 2020 vehicles was not completed correctly and requires a second fix. The 2020 model year also has a hood latch that can fail and allow the hood to fly open while driving, blocking the driver's view.
The 2018 model year has a side curtain airbag inflator that can deploy without a crash, sending parts toward occupants. The 2017 model year carries three separate issues: on diesel-equipped trucks with the optional block-heater cable, a coolant leak or connection fault can short circuit the cable while it is plugged in and start a fire, and a prior repair for this problem on some vehicles was insufficient; dual-tank diesel models also have a rear fuel pump that may not transfer enough fuel, causing the engine to stall suddenly while driving. The 2015 model year has two concerns: a side curtain airbag inflator that can fail and propel metal fragments into the cabin, and a brake pedal pivot nut that can work loose and leave the pedal inoperative or interfering with the accelerator.
Going further back, the 2011 model year on gasoline-equipped trucks with dual tanks has a fuel level sensor that can stick in the low position, causing the rear tank to overflow into the front tank until the expanding front tank contacts the driveshaft and wears a hole through it, leaking fuel.
