The Honda Civic GX has 8 recalls covering the full 2001–2011 production run, all involving the frontal airbags — the most serious being a driver and passenger airbag inflator defect on 2001–2011 models where the inflator can rupture or explode in a crash, sending metal fragments into the cabin and causing serious injury or death.

Every recall on this model traces back to the Takata airbag inflator issue. On 2006–2011 models, the passenger-side frontal airbag inflator can explode and scatter sharp metal fragments toward the passenger seat and surrounding occupants. A separate issue on 2006–2011 vehicles involves a passenger airbag inflator that may have been incorrectly installed, which can prevent the airbag from deploying properly in a crash and raise the risk of injury. The 2008–2010 model years carry an additional passenger-side inflator recall with the same fragmentation risk.

On 2001–2005 models, both the driver and passenger frontal airbag inflators are subject to multiple overlapping recalls covering the same core failure: the inflator can rupture or explode and drive metal fragments toward anyone in the front of the vehicle. The 2001–2004 years are covered by the earliest wave of these filings, while the 2001–2005 range is addressed by subsequent campaigns that expanded the scope as the problem became better understood.
