The 2005 Honda Civic GX has 3 recalls, all involving Takata airbag inflators that can explode and send metal fragments into the cabin, posing a risk of serious injury or death to the driver or passengers.
Both the driver and front passenger airbag inflators are affected. Over time, the inflator propellant can degrade, causing it to combust with too much force when the airbag deploys. Instead of a controlled inflation, the inflator housing can rupture and scatter sharp metal shrapnel through the interior. Because both sides of the front seat face this risk, any collision that triggers the airbags carries the potential for the inflators themselves to cause more harm than the crash. Prior repair attempts through earlier remedy programs did not fully resolve the issue for all affected vehicles, which is why multiple recalls covering this same defect remain open.
