What can fail
Water can seep into the starter solenoid and cause an electrical short, potentially starting an engine compartment fire while the vehicle is parked or being driven.

5/5 Overall
NHTSA 5-Star Safety Rating
For the 2016 Hyundai Genesis, electrical system and engine complaints account for the bulk of what owners report. On the electrical side, owners describe a range of no-start situations where the push-button start appears to engage, accessories, backup camera, and gear selector all respond, but the engine never fires. Door lock actuator failures also show up, with at least one rear door becoming inoperable from both inside and outside. Engine complaints center heavily on the oil pressure switch, which owners say gives inaccurate readings or triggers the oil warning light intermittently, particularly at idle or when stopped, with the light clearing once the car is moving. A smaller cluster of reports ties an unusual rear humming noise and a pre-active seatbelt warning to what owners describe as fuel pump module issues.

The 2016 Hyundai Genesis has 5 recalls, the most serious being two separate fire risks: water entering the starter solenoid and a short circuit in the anti-lock brake module can both ignite an engine compartment fire while the vehicle is parked or being driven.
Two recalls affect airbag performance, and both apply specifically to Genesis Coupe models. The driver-side frontal airbag mounting bolts may not have been tightened enough, allowing the airbag to detach from the steering wheel and fail to protect the driver in a crash. On the passenger side, the wiring connector for the seat's occupant classification sensor can come loose when the seat is adjusted, causing the passenger airbag to deploy at only partial force in a crash rather than responding to the actual occupant. There is also a minor instrumentation concern: corrosion in the parking brake switch can prevent the dashboard warning light from illuminating when the parking brake is applied, leaving a driver unaware the brake is still partially engaged.
