Summary
The Hyundai Genesis has 21 recalls spanning 2006 through 2019, with the most serious being a 2015–2019 starter solenoid defect where water enters the solenoid, causes an electrical short, and can start an engine compartment fire while the vehicle is parked or being driven.
The 2015 model year carries the heaviest recall activity. A separate water intrusion path on 2015 models involves the rear combination lamp assemblies: moisture can seep in, confuse the gear position display, and cause the vehicle to move in a direction the driver didn't select when shifting out of Park. The same year has a tire concern, where Hankook Ventus S1 Noble2 tires installed at the factory can develop sidewall cracks that rupture and cause rapid air loss and loss of control. On 2015 models with a seven-inch instrument cluster, the display can show the wrong vehicle speed or fail to show warning lights correctly, and a diode failure in the same cluster generation can prevent the brake lights from illuminating when the pedal is pressed. There is also a 2015–2016 issue where the parking brake warning light can stop illuminating due to switch corrosion, leaving a driver unaware the parking brake is still engaged.
For Genesis Coupe owners, three recalls are worth noting. On 2013–2015 Coupes with manual transmissions, the rear differential mounting bolts can loosen if the differential and rear crossmember were misaligned at assembly, potentially allowing the driveshaft to disconnect and cutting drive power. On 2010–2013 Coupes, a fractured return spring in the ignition lock switch can allow the car to move unexpectedly when started while in gear without the parking brake set. On 2010–2016 Coupes, the passenger seat occupant classification sensor connector can pull loose when the seat is adjusted, which causes the passenger frontal airbag to deploy only at reduced force in a crash rather than matching the severity of the impact. The 2016 Coupe has a separate airbag concern: the driver-side frontal airbag mounting bolts may have been insufficiently tightened, allowing the airbag to detach from the steering wheel.
Going back to 2009–2012 Genesis sedans, brake fluid that lacks adequate corrosion inhibitors can degrade the hydraulic electronic control unit over time, causing a soft or low brake pedal and reduced stopping ability. The 2009 model year specifically has an additional brake line corrosion concern on underbody components, and a separate issue where a failed diode can prevent the brake lights from lighting up. The 2006–2011 model years share a brake light switch defect that can prevent stop lamps from illuminating during braking and disable cruise control shutoff. The 2012 model has a wiper motor seal that can degrade and allow moisture into the circuit board, eventually causing wiper failure.
