24 recalls across 14 model years
The Hyundai Genesis has 24 recalls spanning the 2006–2016 production run, with the most serious recent issues being fire risks on 2015–2016 models where both the ABS module and the starter solenoid can short circuit and ignite an engine compartment fire, even with the vehicle parked and off.
The 2015–2016 model years carry several additional concerns. On 2015 models, Hankook Ventus S1 Noble2 tires installed as original equipment can develop sidewall cracks that rupture and cause sudden air loss and loss of control. Water leaking into the rear combination lamp assembly on 2015 vehicles can cause the instrument panel to display the wrong gear or delay gear engagement after shifting out of Park, potentially sending the car in an unintended direction. A separate 2015 instrument cluster defect, affecting vehicles with the seven-inch TFT-LCD display, can show an incorrect speed or fail to illuminate warning lights correctly. The 2015–2016 models also have a parking brake warning light that can fail to illuminate when the brake is applied due to switch corrosion, leaving the driver unaware the brake is partially engaged.
The 2016 Genesis Coupe has a recall where the driver-side airbag mounting bolts may not be fully tightened, allowing the airbag to detach from the steering wheel and fail to protect the driver in a crash. On 2013–2015 Genesis Coupe models with manual transmissions, the rear differential mounting bolts can loosen if the differential and rear crossmember were misaligned during assembly, potentially disconnecting the driveshaft and cutting drive power. The 2010–2016 Genesis Coupe has a passenger seat occupant classification sensor connector that can pull loose when the seat is moved, causing the passenger airbag to deploy only at its first stage regardless of the occupant's size. The 2010–2013 Genesis Coupe has an ignition lock return spring that can fracture, allowing the vehicle to be started while in gear without the parking brake, which can cause unintended movement.
Going back to the 2009–2012 sedan, brake fluid that does not adequately protect against corrosion can degrade the hydraulic brake control unit, leading to a soft or low pedal and reduced stopping ability. The 2009 model year specifically has a brake line corrosion risk where underbody lines can fail and leak fluid, and a separate issue where a diode in the brake light circuit can fail and leave the brake lights dark when the pedal is pressed.
The 2012 Genesis sedan has a windshield wiper motor cover seal that can degrade and allow moisture to corrode the motor's circuit board, disabling the wipers in rain. The 2009–2011 models share a brake light switch defect with several other Hyundai models from that era where the switch can fail, preventing the brake lights from illuminating or keeping cruise control from disengaging.
