The 2009 Hyundai Genesis has 5 recalls, the most serious involving corroding brake lines under the vehicle that can leak fluid and significantly extend stopping distances.
All five recalls center on the brake system. The underbody brake line corrosion issue is addressed through an anti-corrosion treatment campaign, but a separate and related problem affects the hydraulic electronic control unit, the module that manages brake pressure distribution. Corrosion inside that unit can cause the brake pedal to feel low or soft underfoot, and brake effectiveness can drop enough to increase stopping distances. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve this issue, and the unit may need replacement on some vehicles.
The remaining two recalls involve the brake lights. The brake light switch can fail, leaving the brake lights dark when the pedal is pressed and preventing cruise control from disengaging when it should. A separate diode in the stop lamp circuit can also fail independently, again causing the brake lights to stay off during braking. Either failure means drivers behind the vehicle get no warning that it is slowing, raising the risk of a rear-end collision.
