Two of the three recalls involve fuel system fire risks. On certain vehicles, a damaged check valve can allow air into the fuel tank, causing the tank to expand, contact hot exhaust components, and melt through, at which point leaking fuel can ignite. Separately, on Sonatas equipped with the 2.5-liter turbocharged engine, fuel can leak at the connection between the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel rail, again creating a fire risk near the engine. On the drivetrain side, a malfunction in the transmission oil pump can disable the vehicle's fail-safe limited-mobility mode, which is designed to keep the car moving at reduced capacity when something goes wrong. If that fallback mode fails to engage, the transmission can lose drive power entirely while the vehicle is in motion, leaving the driver without the ability to accelerate or maintain speed in traffic.
