The 1999 Land Rover Discovery Series II has 4 recalls, the most serious involving the brakes and throttle: a faulty ABS relay can cause sudden unintended braking with no brake lights warning following drivers, and a kinked accelerator cable can strand the throttle open. The ABS system has a second concern as well: a contaminated wheel speed sensor can cause the anti-lock brakes to activate at the wrong moment, extending stopping distances beyond what the driver expects. On the mechanical side, vehicles equipped with the Active Cornering Enhancement system may have an engine idler pulley that can crack and break, throwing the serpentine belt and cutting power to the power steering, water pump, alternator, and air conditioning all at once.

On certain sport utility vehicles the accelerator cable could have become kinked during vehicle assembly, resulting in chaffing of the cable. Continued chaffing can lead to breakage of the interior cable strands. Breakage of the cable strands can result in the throttle being stuck in the open position, increasing the risk of a crash.
