1999 Land Rover Discovery Series Ii

The 1999 Land Rover Discovery Series II has 4 recalls, the most serious being a fraying accelerator cable that can stick the throttle wide open and a faulty ABS relay that can trigger braking unexpectedly without illuminating the brake lights.

The accelerator cable may have been kinked during assembly, causing the inner strands to wear and eventually break. When that happens, the throttle can jam open and the engine will not return to idle, leaving the driver unable to slow down normally. The ABS relay issue is equally serious: contacts inside the relay can weld themselves closed and refuse to open when the ABS computer tells them to, which both disables anti-lock braking and can apply the brakes on its own without warning the driver behind you through the brake lights.

Two additional issues affect the braking system and drivetrain. A contaminated ABS wheel sensor can feed the control unit a bad signal, causing the anti-lock system to activate at the wrong moment and extend stopping distances beyond what any driver would anticipate. On the drivetrain side, vehicles equipped with the Active Cornering Enhancement system may have an engine idler pulley that cracks and eventually breaks apart, throwing off the serpentine belt and cutting power to the power steering, water pump, alternator, air conditioning, and the cornering enhancement system itself all at once.
