The 2006 Lincoln MKZ has 5 recalls, the most serious being Takata airbag inflators on both the driver and passenger sides that can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death.
Both front airbag inflators are affected, and the rupture risk is highest in hot, humid climates where long-term heat and moisture exposure causes the propellant inside to degrade. There is also a concern with Ford aftermarket all-weather floor mats: the driver's mat can shift out of position and contact the accelerator pedal, preventing it from returning freely. On the brake side, a chemical reaction between the anti-lock brake system's hydraulic control unit valves and certain brake fluid additives can prevent the valves from closing fully, requiring more pedal travel to stop the car and raising the risk of a crash.
