The 2009 Mazda CX-9 has 6 recalls, the most serious being a passenger-side front airbag inflator that can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death.
Prior repair attempts using replacement inflators of the same design did not fully resolve the issue, so this defect is covered by multiple filings. On the suspension side, water can seep into the front lower ball joints and cause corrosion severe enough that the lower control arm separates from the joint entirely, causing sudden loss of steering. There is also a wiring concern on vehicles with power-adjustable seats with a memory function: the wiring harness under the seat cushion can catch on a bracket and interfere with seat controls, making the seat move unpredictably while driving.
