The 2002 Mazda Tribute has 5 recalls, with multiple serious issues involving throttle control, a fire risk from leaking brake fluid, and a structural defect that can cause loss of steering.
Two recalls affect throttle behavior on V6-equipped models. In one, insufficient clearance between the engine cover and the speed control cable connector can jam the throttle open at high pedal travel, making the vehicle difficult to slow or stop. In the other, the accelerator cable can stick and prevent the throttle from returning to idle, raising stopping distances unexpectedly. A third accelerator cable issue, also on V6 models, involves the cable's inner liner migrating out of its housing until it contacts the accelerator pedal arm. On the braking side, the brake master cylinder reservoir cap can leak fluid onto the anti-lock brake system's wiring connector, where corrosion can build up and cause the connector to melt, smoke, or catch fire. The structural recall covers lower control arms that can corrode and separate from the vehicle, causing a significant loss of steering control; this recall applies to vehicles registered in certain northeastern and midwestern states.
