12 recalls across 6 model years
The Mercedes-Benz AMG S65 has 12 recalls covering 2015 through 2020 model years, with the most serious being a roof front panel that can detach from 2015 vehicles while driving, becoming a road hazard for surrounding traffic.
The 2015 model year also has a seatbelt installation issue where the left and right front seatbelts may have been swapped at the factory, resulting in an incorrect angle that prevents the belt from locking properly in a crash. Separately within the 2015 production year, the front roof panel bonding is also subject to a follow-on recall covering cases where a prior repair may not have been performed correctly, again allowing the panel to separate.
Moving into the 2016 through 2019 model years, several recalls involve seatbelt hardware. On 2016 coupe and convertible models, seatbelt extenders may fail to retract and can break in a crash, leaving occupants without proper restraint. On 2017 models, the front seatbelt pretensioners may not fire correctly in a crash, reducing how firmly the belt holds the occupant. On 2019 models, the seatbelt tensioning system may not activate in a crash at all. The 2016 model year also has low-beam headlights that may be misaimed from the factory, reducing the driver's forward visibility at night.
On the driver assistance side, 2019 models have a radar sensor issue that can impair the automatic emergency braking system, preventing it from applying partial or full braking before a collision. The 2018 model year has a software calibration error in the lane keeping assist that causes the system to stop intervening in unintended lane departures above 65 miles per hour.
The 2018 through 2020 model years have recalls involving the emergency call system. On 2018-2019 vehicles, the eCall system can fail entirely or dispatch emergency responders to the wrong location after a crash. On 2019-2020 vehicles, a separate fault can disable eCall altogether, preventing any contact with emergency services. Going back to 2015-2016 models, a software fault in the same system can cause it to report an incorrect date and time, which can result in an inaccurate location being relayed to emergency responders.
