The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL550 has 4 recalls, the most serious being a power steering defect where the control unit can lose its electrical connection and cause sudden loss of steering assist, making the car significantly harder to steer.
The front passenger airbag carries two separate concerns. In certain vehicles, an assembly error means the airbag may not deploy correctly in a crash, leaving the front passenger without intended protection. A separate software issue affecting the airbag control system can also cause airbags to fail to deploy as intended, again raising the risk of injury in a collision. On the communications side, a software fault in the automatic emergency call system can cause it to report an incorrect date, time, and vehicle location when a crash triggers an emergency call, which may send first responders to the wrong place and delay their arrival.
