The 1971 Mercury Capri has 5 recalls, the most serious involving the steering wheel attachment to the collapsible column, which can fail and reduce the column's ability to absorb energy in a crash, and a gear shift selector lever on manual transmission models that can break during shifting.
On the visibility side, the windshield wiper pivot splines can loosen and allow the wiper arm and blade to fly off entirely, leaving the driver with no wipers in rain or snow. The headlight switch housing can also crack and cause an open circuit, cutting power to both the headlights and taillights or preventing them from turning on at all. On vehicles equipped with the optional reclining driver's seat, a poor or missing weld in the seat back frame can cause the reclining mechanism to fail and the seat back to loosen and eventually break.
