The 2008 Nissan Xterra has 5 recalls, the most serious involving certain Garmin nüvi 750 GPS units sold through Nissan dealerships, where a defect in the lithium-ion battery can cause it to overheat and start a fire.
On the brake side, the anti-lock brake and vehicle dynamic control actuator may have been assembled with extra ball bearings inside the valve, which can block brake fluid flow and reduce braking force at one or both front wheels, extending stopping distances. There is also an airbag concern: the Nissan emblem on the driver's airbag cover can crack and break free during deployment, turning into a projectile inside the cabin. The final recall is a label issue: the tire placard on certain vehicles lists an incorrect vehicle capacity weight, which could lead to overloading if an owner relies on that figure when loading the vehicle.
