The 1989 Peugeot 405 has 4 recalls, the most serious involving two separate fuel system fire risks: a crash can cause excessive fuel leakage, and a fuel line in the engine compartment can deteriorate over time and ignite.
On the fuel line issue, the supply line can contact a high-voltage wire in the engine bay, wearing through the line and eventually causing a fuel leak and engine fire. This affects sedans and station wagons. The headlight lenses are also a concern: the plastic in the lens can gradually cloud and dim over time, reducing how far the headlights illuminate the road ahead. There is also a brake lighting issue where the brake lamp circuit cannot be tested in a specific ignition position between "on" and "start," which means a burnt-out brake light may go undetected.
