5 recalls across 4 model years
The Plymouth Colt has 5 recalls spanning 1977 to 1994, with the most serious being a transfer case lubrication failure on 1994 all-wheel drive models that can cause the transfer case to lock up and result in sudden loss of vehicle control.
The 1994 recall shares its severity rating with a much older issue: on 1977 models, the front brake hoses can fail under flexing stress, leak fluid, and reduce front braking effectiveness. Three recalls from the early 1990s all involve front seat belt protection. On 1993 models, two separate defects can leave the shoulder belt anchored at the door pillar rather than properly positioned across the occupant: one involves a cable in the driver-side belt guide rail that can work loose and jam the anchorage, while the other involves an over-lubricated door latch switch whose rubber cover deforms and prevents the belt from moving into position when the door closes. In either case, the shoulder belt would not restrain the driver properly in a crash. On 1991 models, the red plastic release buttons on the front seat belt buckles can break and shed fragments into the buckle mechanism, causing the buckle to work improperly and leaving occupants without adequate restraint in a crash.
