6 recalls across 8 model years
The Scion xB has 6 recalls covering the 2008-2015 model years, with the most serious being a passenger-side airbag inflator defect affecting 2008-2015 models where the inflator can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death.
The airbag inflator issue is the Takata recall, one of the largest in automotive history, and it spans nearly the entire production run of the xB. These recalls were filed in multiple waves as the scope expanded over time, but they all describe the same underlying hazard: the passenger frontal airbag inflator can explode with excessive force, scattering sharp metal fragments toward occupants. The filings specifically target vehicles sold or registered in high-humidity regions including Alabama, California, Florida, Hawaii, Texas, and several U.S. territories, where moisture accelerates the degradation of the inflator propellant. The 2008-2013 model years were covered in the earlier waves, and the 2014-2015 model years were added in a later expansion.
The remaining recall covers 2009-2011 models and involves the power window switch. Without adequate lubrication, the switch contacts can corrode when exposed to moisture and debris, short-circuit, and overheat to the point of melting the switch assembly.
