The 2009 Scion xB has 5 recalls, the most serious being a passenger-side airbag inflator that can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death.

The airbag inflator issue accounts for four of the five recalls, all describing the same underlying defect across different filing scopes and vehicle populations. The inflator can explode or rupture in a crash rather than deploying cleanly, turning the airbag housing into a source of metal shrapnel directed at whoever is sitting in the passenger seat. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the issue for all affected vehicles, which is why multiple rounds of recalls address the same component. The fifth recall covers the power window master switch, where moisture and debris can enter the switch if the internal lubricant has degraded. When that happens, the sliding electrical contacts can short circuit, causing the switch to overheat and melt, which raises the risk of a fire starting inside the door.
