The 2002 Subaru Impreza has 3 recalls, the most serious involving front lower control arms that can corrode and fracture, potentially causing a sudden and complete loss of front suspension on one side.

Road salt and humidity gradually eat through the steel until the control arm cracks at the point where it attaches to the chassis, which can affect steering and vehicle stability without warning. On the wagon body style, a separate recall addresses the liftgate: the bolts holding the stay dampers in place may not have been tightened properly during assembly, and with repeated use the welded nuts can strip and fail, allowing the heavy rear gate to drop suddenly onto anyone standing beneath it. The third recall involves the driver's seat mounting bolt on the forward edge of the seat slide rail, which can work loose over time and eventually fall out entirely. If that happens during a crash, the seat can separate from the slide rail and shift out of position, increasing the risk of injury to the driver beyond what the seatbelt and airbag are designed to manage.
