The 2016 Toyota Avalon has 4 recalls, the most serious affecting hybrid models only: the front driveshaft can separate while driving, cutting power and creating a rollaway risk if the driver steps out without setting the parking brake.
Three recalls involve the airbag system. In certain crashes, the airbag control unit can malfunction and prevent airbags and seatbelt pretensioners from firing, leaving occupants less protected than the vehicle is designed to provide. On certain vehicles, the front passenger knee airbag may have been secured with the wrong fasteners, which can loosen over time and interfere with deployment. There is also a concern with the passenger seat sensor that determines whether the front passenger airbag should be active: an calibration error means the system may not correctly read who is sitting in the seat, and the airbag may not deploy as intended in a crash.
